Can I bargain in China? If so, how hard?

In China, bargaining should be done when you are dealing with peddlers in the free market, especially with those who set up stands along passage or at the parking zone near sightseeing attractions. Usually you need to cut the price as low as possible because the more you cut, the more you save. Pretending leaving can also help if negotiation can not be reached. However you need to be very very careful when the price drops from heavenly high to hell low because some dishonest peddlers will use their magician hands to turn the 100 bills into 10. Therefore, always pay exactly.

Generally speaking, restaurants, shopping malls, supermarkets, department stores in China often carry out fixed price. If there is anything on sale, discount rate would be marked.

In terms of traveling, hotel walk in price will be higher than contract price, please consult us if you need to book your accommodation. Flight tickets can be purchased based on instant discount. Train tickets fare and entrance fee are fixed in China.

Is there complimentary food on Chinese train? Are passengers only allowed in the cabin? Is there space for a lot of luggage?

Most Chinese passenger trains have dinning cars. There you can sit down and have your meals or drinks, for which you pay. Do not expect fancy dishes; it may also be crowded at certain hours. Service staff may also come by with food carts to offer some snacks, etc., for which you pay too. You may get a bottle of water free. A Chinese dish with rice costs about 30 Chinese RMB Yuan (about US$5.00). It is also possible to buy food or drinks at platforms where trains stop. You need Chinese money for the purchases. Some Chinese passengers do enjoy buying goods known for particular localities (pies, sausages, etc.).

If you do go to eat in the dinning car, make sure you take good care of your valuables and luggage.

Outside the sleeping cabins, there are some little seats by the windows where you can sit if you do not want to stay in your cabin. You can walk a little through the cars too. Generally, however, there is not a whole lot moving space on a train. It used to be that when a train stops at a station, passengers can step off and take a little walk on the platform. Nowadays, in the rush to get to their final destinations, trains are making fewer stops on the way, and the stops are so short that conductors advise people to stay on the train during the stops. If you do get to walk on a platform, re-board on time so that you do not miss your train.

As for luggage storage space, if you have two suitcases and a couple of small bags, you should be all right. Of course there are size and weight limits. Generally, for luggage, it is no more than 20 kg (44 lbs) per adult, 10 kg per child; the total length of one piece of luggage (width, length, height) should be no more than 160 cm (63 in) (if it is a longish item, the length should no more than 200 cm). If you have than allowed, you are expected pay for them.

China lies mainly in the temperate and subtropical zones. Generally, its southern part (East China, South China and Southwest china) is warm, humid, and rainy; its northern part (North China, Northeast China, and northwest China) is dry and windy.
In spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) you will need a lined jacket or woolen sweater over light clothes. In summer (June to August) cool cotton garments are recommended. In winter (December to February) a light cotton-patted coat will keep you warm enough in the south; but in the north a heavy woolen coat or down parka is a must.
Later spring and late summer are often rainy especially in the southern part of China, so you would be wise to bring some rainwear with you. And of course good walking shoes are essential at any time of year.
